There were so many things that we got to do today that we don't normally do.... We had our Monday specials (art and music) along with the FFA petting zoo and the Dental Presentation!

We survived it all and still had time for reading, math, and our spelling test. Everyone got their math quiz back from Thursday. We will be taking our math test on Wednesday after we go over the study guide tomorrow! It's going to be a great week.

While we probably won't be experiencing an earthquake here any time soon, we were making some artificial ones in our room today. As we have been learning about the layers of the earth, we took some time today to be engineers who plan the structures on our earth. How do they build things that can sustain such occurrences like an earthquake? We will be talking more about this in class during the week.

I CANNOT believe that it is already past the midterm for the 3rd quarter!!! It is crazy that the year is moving so quickly. Explorer Reports

Writing a report can be hard. I remember having to write a report in 5th grade about an animal. I picked Persian Cats. When I was in 5th grade we didn't have the internet so I relied on books and encyclopedias. To help out my 5th graders, we have been taking this one step at a time.
First we read a report about Christopher Columbus. We talked about how the 5 paragraphs were laid out: Introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
We broke down our own report writing into 8 steps:
1. Choose a topic.
2. Decide on the subtopics for the body paragraphs.
3. Locate information. Our class had to have at least 3 sources of information and only one of them could be from the internet. This meant that we spent a class in the library and used the library card catalog. We also had a Language Arts lesson about Encyclopedias. We used encyclopedias in the classroom and in the library.
4. Take notes. This meant we read the information and then had to paraphrase it, or put it into our own words.
5. Convert notes to Paragraphs.
6. Revise and Edit.
7. Produce the Final Copy. For us this means typing it in the computer lab this coming Monday (January 30).
8. Include Additional Materials. This could mean maps, graphs, diagrams, or other items. Later in the year when we do disease reports, this will mean including a bibliography.

Do you know how to speak or write another language?
Our reading story this week is a Chinese Folktale. It lends itself easily to learning about Calligraphy. Today in class we talked about the skills used in this ancient art and then everyone got to create a scroll to show their name.
Tomorrow we will be reading the story and enjoying some fortune cookies! Hope you are having a great week.

Penguin Writing Activity

One thing I love about writing activities is the freedom that student's have to come up with things that show their personality or sense of humor. I loved doing this Penguin Activity.

It was interesting to see what each student chose to write about. With the penguins in mind, do you think we will get the snow that is being predicted? The most recent forecast I heard was 3 to 8 inches between now and 9 pm Thursday... Safe travels!

I am not at all sure where the week went! We have definitely been busy in the classroom at the end of the hall. So busy in fact that we haven't even had our merit activity for December yet.... It crossed my mind to try and squeeze it on tomorrow but I decided we would wait until Monday to celebrate our good behavior. We started the week by making some new goals for the year. We decided against calling them resolutions. We have goals with at least 2 action steps in place to help us reach those goals. Here is what our blank goal sheet looked like:

Polar Express Day

Today was Polar Express Day at school. Everyone was invited to wear pajamas for the day and we all watched the movie this afternoon. During the movie, hot, hot, hot, hot chocolate was served!
Tomorrow we will be caroling at the nursing home in Elizabeth and throughout Hanover. It'll be a great way to prepare for the winter break!

We learned about the tribes that lived in different cultural regions across the US and then we read books about Native Americans that made lasting contributions. We worked in small groups to create posters to share some of the things we've learned.

Friday afternoon we got our classroom all jazzed up for the season. We made some popcorn strings to put on our classroom tree. We started decorating the outside of our door, too. It's going to be a reindeer stable. We also hung snowflakes from the ceiling and stockings on the window.

It's always fun to learn about clouds. In our study of weather and the water cycle, we learned the names of many different types of clouds. The 3 types our 5th graders will need to know are cumulus, cirrus, and stratus. Hopefully your 5th grader can tell you what each cloud type looks like!

How Persuasive Can You Be?

In grammar we have been focusing on writing persuasive papers. Last week we read an essay about Global Warming and a letter about recycling. Today to try and hit home with some more persuasive techniques, I read a picture book to the class (This is one of my favorite things to do. Thanks to Bailey and Jacob for going to the library for me:-)

Poor Ike tries all kinds of things to persuade Mrs. LaRue that he should not be at obedience school. I'm sure the 5th graders you know have tried some of these same things when they want something! We'll have to test their persuasive skills soon.

I cannot get over the creativity in all of today's costumes! So fun to see. Since I have such a sweet tooth, I also liked all the sweet Halloween treats. These finger cookies were definitely my favorite.

In one of my of my conferences on Thursday, the parents brought up a recent segment they had seen on the Today show. It was on a topic that I was interested in so I came home and looked it up. Field Trip FUN!

On Friday morning we stepped outside of the 4 walls of our school building to do some great learning. The trip was new and different for me and I LOVED it. I think all of the 5th graders did, too.

Our first stop was Buehler Preserve. I never even knew this place existed and it is fantastic. The next time I am in Galena with my own kiddos, you can be sure we will walk out along this trail and enjoy some of the wonderful hidden treasures right near home.

While at Buehler Preserve we broke into 2 groups. Our group started with bird banding. I had never seen that done and I was thoroughly impressed. I'll share some bird banding pictures with you tomorrow. As for today, enjoy the great fall weather! See you back here tomorrow.

This week is going so quickly. I'm sure some of it is that it's only a 4 day student attendance week. Another reason might be that Open House is Thursday Night. I hope you are going to be there! We have been finishing up our Photo Essays (They are looking great!) and creating our hallway biome showcase. Wednesday and Thursday will be busy but it will be great for the 5th graders to show off a little for their families! Are you enjoying the great weather? That could be another reason the week seems to be flying by.... it's almost as good as summer.

Have you ever wondered what things I carry back and forth between school and home? I will tell you that there are some evenings when my school bag doesn't even make it into the house but usually it does so that I can grade papers or plan things for the next week.
So most of you would expect there to be some chocolate and some bananas. If that's what you guessed was in my bag, you would be correct. That isn't all that is in this bag, though. Tonight I am planning out our photo essay project and so I am trying to create some graphic organizers for all the classroom at the end of the hall fifth graders to fill out as they work on their essay writing!

Week in Review

There are so MANY things I forget to write about in our weekly newsletter that goes home on Fridays. I think about them at about 3:20 on Friday as I walk out of our room for the weekend. I forgot to include that.... I didn't write that.... Oh my goodness... How could I have forgotten that? So I will use today's post to review all those types of things:
1. We have been focusing on our RRS behavior (respect, responsible, and safe). I have seen some great examples of these behaviors. Ben showed great respect by holding the school door for all the classes on Friday after school. Thanks, Ben. I also appreciate the way our class is usually respectful of other classes by walking silently through the hallways.
2. We read a tall tale this week and tried to pick out compound subjects and predicates. It was pretty fun to do and it wasn't really all that difficult now that we know what those compound subjects and predicates look like.
3. We did some readers theaters on Friday. Fun. The stories were really pretty entertaining.

I'm sure I will think of other forgotten things later in the day but for now that is my week in review. Hope you enjoyed the cool first weekend of fall!

It's Thursday!

I cannot believe that today is September 22! The time just slips away. Before you know it we will be seeing each other at Open House and then again at conferences.

Last week we had our Boat Races to wrap up our story Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Connor was our boat race champion. View the sideways video (seriously why does it turn sideways?) to see some of our classroom excitement.

All of our midterms were signed and returned today. Thanks to everyone for getting them back to me right away. Tomorrow we have our spelling posttest, our reading quiz, and we will be performing some reader's theaters. Check back on Sunday for a Week in Review!

Running

Today the class had to run their mile for fitness testing. It was a perfect day so I decided to join them. They did a great job. Everyone was able to complete their mile in under 15 minutes!

Tomorrow is Friday already! It's the middle of the first quarter. I can hardly believe it!

I don't know about you but I LOVE a good puzzle or problem that I have to solve. The 5th graders this year seem to love puzzles, too. This week we have been working our way through traffic jams with Rush Hour. Kameron and Wyatt sure were thinking hard trying to solve puzzle 13. I think it's still a traffic jam!

Our Third Week in Review

With this week being a short week, we certainly still accomplished great things. One big thing we worked on during language was writing introductions. On Thursday we did a gallery walk to find out about 8 different types of hooks we could use in our introductions. Even though I gave 8 choices, most of the fifth graders use the question as their hook. We'll work on that! Hopefully everyone has a 4 sentence introduction now (hook, topic, wrap-up, personal feeling). We also worked on the 4 types of sentences. In social studies on Friday we read a book about 9/11. For homework the fifth graders need to interview 2 people about what they remember from that day in 2001. We watched "The Best Bad Thing" during reading on Friday. It was exciting to see how Rinko changed from the beginning of the story.

Biome Game from Wednesday

I always love it when we get the opportunity to have guests in school. Whether it is a guest sharing their hobbies or professions or guests that are just spending some time with us, it is a treat! On Wednesday we had a guest instructor: Mrs. Conklin.

She came into 5th grade to teach a lesson about biomes. After listing the 6 biomes on the board, she talked about animals in the biomes and sorted them by herbivore and carnivore. Then she introduced a Bingo Biome game. Once numbers were called out, students divided into groups based on the biome card that they had. The groups had to figure out their kilocalorie amounts based on the numbers on the bingo cards. The desert biome was only worth 1 time their calorie amount while the tropical rain forest was worth 12 times it's calorie amount because it creates much more energy per square foot.

Hopefully everyone learned a little more about biomes and enjoyed a different perspective. There's more to learn this week!

Our Second Week in Review

What were the highlights of the week?
-Read "Wise Old Woman" by Yoshiko Uchida. It is a folk tale about a cruel lord who sends all the people over the age of 70 from his village old to the woods to die. One young farmer can't do that with his mother and so she is being hidden in a cave under the kitchen. When she helps save the village, the lord realizes the value of experience and knows that wisdom comes with age.
-Wrote imagery poems.
-Read short stories.
-Practiced drawing arrays in math.
-Learned about factors and factor pairs.
-Played Factor Captor
-Talked about sentences and fragments.
-Learned how to "fix" fragments by adding either a subject or a predicate.
-Created a mnemonic device to remember the 6 North American Land Biomes.
-Took notes on the government we have in the US.
-Discussed how lucky we are to have the opportunity to own businesses and property.

These are just a few of the highlights that I thought of from this week. Hope you are enjoying the weekend. Don't forget that tomorrow is Labor Day. Back to school on Tuesday! See you then.

Wonderful Wednesday

I can hardly believe that we have finished a whole week of school. We are starting to get into our good routines and we know our schedule pretty well. Today during our science time we learned about mnemonic devices and how we can use them to help us remember things. Have you ever heard the saying, "My very excellent mother just served us nine pizzas"? This is a popular mnemonic device for remembering the names of the planets. We needed to create a saying like this to remember the 6 north american land biomes. Ask your child what their saying would be (clue:tttddg).

We also used time in class to answer the section review questions in a group. Friday we will be doing an activity to match animals and plants with the correct biomes.

Science was just one of the great times of the day. We had our 1st ticket drawings of the school year. Students can earn tickets by doing something above and beyond what is expected. Brady earned a ticket for having his reading books out and silently ready without having to be told. Jacob and Zima earned tickets for great observations in math class. Connor earned a ticket for holding a door for others. Random times during the year I will have "treats" that I will award to those with tickets.

'Mazing Monday

Today in reading class we began our first unit: Time of My Life. Part of the introduction was a poem titled "Lemon Tree". I love starting the year off with this poem. It uses the 5 senses to talk about an exciting experience. Everyone went home this evening with the task of writing their own poem about an exciting experience they have had. Each poem needed to be at least 8 lines long and use imagery. I can't wait to read what everyone writes. I'll try and share some of the completed poems later in the week.

Our First Week In Review

We have completed our first week! So I thought I would start a weekly feature for Sunday to review the week and help prepare for the week to come. Some of the things we did this week included going over classroom rules, procedures, and expectations. Everyone turned in their signed rules and consequences sheet. NICE JOB getting those turned in right away! We had a Bus Evacuation drill, helped kindergartners with lunch, full band lessons, library check out. Even though we only had 3 days of attendance, it was definitely a full week. Thanks to Connor for bringing in his guitar for our pictures on Friday. It will be fun to get those pictures completed so that we can hang them in the hallway.

What can we look forward to for next week? Reading our story "Wise Old Woman", writing an imagery poem, starting our multiplication unit, and biomes in science. Check in this week to see some of the progress we make!

The Most WONDERFUL Time of the Year!!! I know that is what people usually say around Christmas, but this is the best time of the year to me. It's all about beginnings and fresh starts. This is the year to be ......the best student, a good reader, a math MonSTAR.....Whatever it is that you want to be, this is the time of the year to start it!!!

We had a great first day. It went SOOO quickly that I have tons more great things planned for tomorrow and I know we won't finish all of that either.

The most important point to me was what the author says at the end. As a teacher it is still my job to set the expectations. The end result that my students get will only be as great as the guidance that I provide for them. If they don't know what they need to at the end, did they fail or did I?

I'd like to invite you to take a minute (okay it's more like 12 minutes) to watch this little YouTube video. This past school year I had the opportunity to work with some local businessmen who were looking for ways they could help educators. How great it was to discuss technology and it's uses with people who really were using it and knew that I needed to prepare kids for the future. One of the gentlemen sent me this video.

Now that you have watched it, what do you think?

As a teacher, I wanted to take this a little further. How can we foster creativity and get the most out of each child's potential? I definitely agree that there are many types of learning styles. I feel like part of my "job" is to meet the technology savvy learning style.

This week as I am in class I hope to find some super ways to use Web 2.0 to enhance my classroom activities. I know what my objectives are now I just need to meet them in a way that excites and motivates my students.
